When Ghirardelli Square launched their award‐winning recycling program in the late 1990s, they were ahead of the curve. But by the time 2008 rolled around, the program had lost steam — less than 40% of their waste was being diverted to recycling or compost. Because trash disposal costs were skyrocketing, the Square’s certified property manager Rita Hernandez decided it was time to update and rejuvenate their waste management plan.
